Glass Weirdness Afoot

Lampwork Glass Lentil BeadsHmmm. I wanted these beads to be a soft, pale yellow. I'm all out of the pale yellow I would have normally used so I used a Vetrofond oddlot one that I've had for years. The first bead did indeed start off looking pale yellow, just like I intended, but there must have been some strange glass chemistry happening between the oddlot and the base colour because the more I worked on the bead the darker it got. It ended up this stone-like khaki colour which I actually quite like so I just went with what the glass wanted to do, kept on making beads and now I have this set of un-yellow lentils!

I've had so many lovely comments and emails about this particular style of bead. Thing is, the design has no name as yet. So I thought I'd ask for your comments and suggestions as to what I should call this particular type of bead. I'm not looking for a name for this particular set of lentils with regard to colour - I'm looking for a name for the design itself. Please click here to see more lentils like the ones above but in different colours. People have said that these lentils remind them of rose petals, rolled up fabric and coiled ribbon.

If you have any name ideas please jot them down in my comments section or if you prefer you can send me an email and I'll add your suggestions to the list. Please feel free to add as many names as you'd like and I'll pick my favourite one at 7.00pm on Thursday 22nd January. The person who provides the name I like most will get a lucky dip bag of my lampwork beads.

  1. How about Dragon's tongue, or serpeant's tongue?

Not sure I like the "golden" ones, but the turquoise/neptune ones were lovely.

  2. Ooh I love them all!! My first thought is the look like unbaked croissants! So I have a few suggestions- crystalised croissants, silk reels, satin wraps. All gorgeous whatever they end up being named. PS Have fun with my friend Anne on Wed!

  3. I think they look like scrolls of paper, but if you named it anything scroll related it would probably get confused with scrollwork people put on beads. But they do look like actual scrolls or like previously mentioned rolled up ribbon.

  5. These are lovely Laura, my first thought when I saw the colour was 'champagne', I think they turned out very nicely. As for names, I'm not sure - I originally thought they looked like rose buds, but I'm leaning towards the wrapped ribbon camp now... maybe 'wrapped buds'?

  6. Satin Swirls? Going with the scroll theme, 'Magna Carta', or is that just too obscure!

  7. They're most definitely wrapped up wonders (that's suggestion one), they are super. But my main suggestion is a word play on the "wrapped" bit and call them "Rapture in ..." and then the colour (unyellow or whatever!) :-)

  8. Oh I like those, they would look brilliant on a gold bracelet, shame I can't afford to make one! Well this name thing has got me thinking. As they are encased I like the idea of Enveloped Swirls or something. I shall have to work on that enveloped idea a bit I think.

  9. This is off on a totally different track, but the layered effect within the bead reminded me of the layered 'shell' type skin you see on insects - so maybe Beetle Lentils or something like that? Hope I'm making sense... :)

  11. Laura, they're absolutelly stunning in any colour!
I don't know if it has anything to do with lunch time, but I would name them "Croissants Glacé" with a french accent!!!

  12. I know you don't want a name for these particular beads but as soon as I saw them they reminded me of cooked globe artichokes. Once you trim them the bottom of the vegetable has folds exactly like these.

As for a general name, they remind me of pastries made with filo. Or layers of satin sheets. How about "between the sheets"!

  15. Hows about - millefeuille?
Which if my GCSE french is still around means thousand layers - aka in my book as scrummy french cake with layers of puff pastry and creme anglaise topped with icing and swirly decoration (aka in the UK as vanilla slices - doesn't quite sound as sexy now does it LOL, doesn't quite taste as nice as the french ones either).
Loving the colour BTW, really different.

  18. They remind me of the scrolls on Ionic capitals on tops of classical columns - so Ionic scrolls then maybe
I love that colour too and it is comforting to know that you don't always get exactly what you expect out of your kiln either

  19. To me these beads looks like long scrolls of parchment paper. Maybe parchment or manuscript would be a nice name for the style. After seeing them in the many colors I they also remind me of paper quilling. Such beautiful beads do deserve a lovely name, I hope you can decide on one!
