'Rhapsody In Pink'

Pink Lampwork Beads By Laura SparlingI had my classical music album on while I was making these (I've got eclectic taste in music, me) and when I heard Gershwin's fabulous Rhapsody In Blue I knew that these beads would have to be called 'Rhapsody In Pink'. I think the name suits them.

I had more spider hassle today. It was a different one from yesterday - he was about three times the size! There was no way I could have worked in the shed with it there so I went and got Andrew, my next door neighbour, to come and evict it for me. Andrew was telling me about how he got bitten by a spider once. Bitten. By a spider. In his house. Next door. That is scary and way too close for comfort!

  1. Ooohhh! Yummy! I love it when you do a color combo and then reverse the color plan. Dark on light then light on dark. So cool! Your beads are sheer eye-candy for me. You talk about letting up on your control of glass, I yearn for control. My natural style leans toward the organic (based on my history with my various art projects), but I want to push myself in the precision direction. And yes, you have a signature style. When I look at the Flickr photos from the jewelry designers who use your beads, I can instantly tell it's one of yours. It’s so cool you’re stretching yourself. I can see you already wandering off in your own artistic direction with these Rhapsody beads. I’m also eager to see what you do when you combine your new “relaxed” attitude toward those sneaky little reactives with your natural precision.
Your spider stories crack me up. Spiders aren't on my favorites list, but I have critters I like even less...centipedes. If it moves fast and has a lot of legs, I DON'T LIKE IT. I'm good with the 2-4 legged critters (birds, dogs, bunnies, hamsters) But the zero legs (snakes, I live in Texas after all) or > 4 legs (Fire Ants, Spiders, and *massive shudder* centipedes)...well, I'm with you! The more legs on a critter, the greater the heebie-jeebie factor. *sympathy shudder*

  2. Thank you, Jenn! :o)

When I studied art at school and college all my artwork was precise and graphical-looking. It used to drive one of my art teachers mad! He'd tell me to 'loosen up' and 'be more organic' (sounds like something a dance teacher would say) and once he even confiscated my black acrylic paint so I couldn't outline anything. I guess my brain is just hardwired to do precise, symmetrical stuff.

It's so nice to know that my beads are recognisable. Such a compliment!

I think I'll be getting the Copper Green out next. Now that is a sneaky colour!

Spiders! I have a proper, proper fear of them. Not just a girly oooh-it's-a-spider thing but a real phobia. I go all wobbly when I see one - my heart rate goes up and I start sweating and shaking! It all goes back to when I was about 20 and a big huge spider got caught in my dressing gown. Having a massive spider trapped between your dressing gown and - well, nothing - kind of puts you off those eight-legged creatures! *Shudder!*

I'm OK with most animals. I can't stand slugs and moths/butterflies. I wouldn't want to be trapped in a room with cockroaches, centipedes, crickets or beetles but they don't freak me out as much as spiders do. I understand your centipede thing - that many-legs-scuttling thing is quite off-putting.

I couldn't be doing with snakes! Rather you than me there.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment, Jenn.

  3. Pretty beads - can't wait to see the next lot!
I think if you have the tendency to be precise, it's very hard to try not to be - I have the same problem in my painting, but have come to terms with the fact I'll never be a loose, splashy painter. Find the detailed work quite therapeutic actually!
I'm OK with insects (although would prefer not to be hands on) but discovered when I lived in Greece that my irrational phobia is geckos - complete hysteria sets in! Just can't control it - weird!

  4. Hmmmm. Geckos. They don't bother me in a visual sense but I wouldn't want to hold one. I'd rather see a gecko in my shed than a spider, though!
